Nebraska Dems plan 2012 caucuses

By Juan Perez Jr.

The Nebraska Democratic Party plans to hold presidential caucuses again in 2012, trying to build on momentum it gained while holding the state’s first-ever presidential caucuses in 2008.

Because President Barack Obama may not face a serious challenger from his own party if he runs for a second term, state party officials had debated the merits of holding caucuses again. But the state party’s central committee voted to move forward.

“The 2008 caucus energized Democrats across the state,” said Vic Covalt, state chairman of the Nebraska Democratic Party.

“The 2012 caucus provides yet another chance for Nebraska Democrats to voice their opinions about our political process as well as meet other active Democrats in their neighborhoods,” Covalt said.

Until 2008’s close Democratic primary between Obama and Hillary Clinton, presidential candidates had not typically campaigned in Nebraska. But Obama campaigned in Nebraska ahead of the 2008 caucuses, as did Clinton’s daughter, Chelsea.
