Film explores Muslim punk rock
The emergence of the punk rock scene within the young Muslim community is the subject of the documentary film “Taqwacore: The Birth of Punk Islam.” The movie will be screened Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Film Streams’ Ruth Sokolof Theater, 14th and Mike Fahey Streets, with a post-show discussion.
The screening, in partnership with Project Interfaith, is part of Film Streams’ community development program. The goal of showing this film is to point out the diversity within the Muslim community.

Movies’ influence on Bellows to be topic
“Kent Bellows and the Influence of Film” will be the topic of a lecture by Molly Hutton, guest curator of the Kent Bellows exhibition at Joslyn Art Museum. The lecture, at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, is free with museum admission.
Hutton says Bellows was influenced not only by artists such as Rembrandt, Eakins and Massacio but also by horror and sci-fi movies and such filmmakers as Bergman, Fincher and Hitchcock.
Bellows, a master of American realism and a Nebraska native, died in 2005. Hutton lives in Buffalo, N.Y.
David City museum to show Wisconsin art
“Wisconsin Workhorses,” an exhibition by Wisconsin artist Matthew Jacobson, will be on display Wednesday through Feb. 27 at the Bone Creek Museum of Agrarian Art in David City, Neb.
An opening reception Saturday will include a curator’s talk about the exhibition at 3:30 p.m.
Jacobson will also hold an artist workshop at 2 p.m. Feb. 26 titled “Content and Compositional Choices.” Information is available online: www.bonecreek.org
Screenwriting seminar to focus on characters
A Saturday screenwriting seminar to benefit the Baright Public Library in Ralston will offer exercises in character profiling.
Sally Walker will lead the seven-hour seminar, each hour of which will include 20 minutes of lecture, 20 minutes of writing and 20 minutes of discussion.
Registration is required and closes Tuesday. The cost is $30. The seminar will run from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Information: 402-331-7636.
CU actors to put on a show at Lied Center
Creighton University seniors Maria Becvar and Dan Tracy will present a Musical Theatre Showcase at 7 p.m. Saturday on the main stage of the Lied Education Center for the Arts, 2500 California Plaza. Linda Shirck will accompany them on piano. The event is free.
Becvar and Tracy were nominated for several awards for their performances as Maria and Tony in “West Side Story” at Creighton two years ago. Both were also in the cast of “Godspell” at Creighton and performed in the Nebraska Shakespeare Festival’s company last summer.
Holiday reception at gallery in Old Market
Anderson O’Brien Fine Art, 1108 Jackson St., will hold its holiday open house reception Friday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Key Note Sounds Soft Jazz will perform live music, and new small artworks on display will include handcrafted jewelry, ceramics and ornaments.
Cooperative gallery’s theme: Half of a half
The Artists’ Cooperative Gallery holiday show will explore the theme “Quarters Only” in works by regional artists at 405 S. 11th St.
Opening celebrations will be Friday from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., and Dec. 5 from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m.
Mixed-media pieces by Marcia Joffe-Bouska will explore the ideas “quarter turn” and “drawn and quartered,” while Thomas Hamilton will show ceramic coin banks and Carol Meis Ellington will offer collages depicting the four seasons.
