Patriots' Urban pledges to become a Coyote

Quentin Urban found a bit of everything that he was looking for in a college at South Dakota, and it was more than enough for the Millard South senior to give the Coyotes his pledge.

The 5-foot-10, 195-pound All-Nebraska selection said Thursday that he recently committed to South Dakota, picking the FCS school in Vermillion over a handful of other options, including an offer from UNO and a walk-on opportunity at Nebraska.

“It’s a football environment, a football town,” Urban said. “I kind of just decided that was somewhere I wanted to be.”

The three-sport star will play rover/safety role for the Coyotes. USD coaches told him that he was the No. 1 safety on their board.

The combination of early playing time, and a staff that he called “awesome” was the difference, Urban said. His visit in early December was the turning point.

“It’s a huge relief to just have it done,” Urban said. “Obviously I’m looking forward to getting there and everything, but it’s nice to just be able to have that out of the way.”

USD has six Nebraskans on its current roster.

Urban is battling a minor knee injury that he suffered during basketball practice. He said MRI’s were negative and he expects to return in the next two weeks.

He’s also one of the top baseball players in the area. Urban was a second-team All-Nebraska selection as an outfielder, but also was a standout on the mound and at the plate.

On the football field he was a force on both offense and defense. Urban was a driving force behind Millard South’s run to the state championship game in November. It was the third-straight title game appearance for the Patriots. They won the Class A crown in 2009.
