Sidney Hirsch is learning to be a smoother runner.

The Millard West sophomore’s winning time in the 1,600 meters at Saturday’s Omaha South Invitational is an example of her progress.

Her 5:19:43 was eight seconds faster than her time at the meet in 2010 and less than two seconds slower than her Class A silver-medal time from last year’s state meet.

“Last year I was really up and down with my lap times,’’ Hirsch said. “I’ve been doing better with those splits.’’

Hirsch also won the 3,200 as the Wildcats repeated as champions in the 10-school girls meet at Burke Stadium. They claimed their 139.5-138 win over defending Class A champion Omaha North by beating the Vikings by 10 seconds for the win in the final event, the 1,600 relay.

North’s LaQue Moen-Davis, a Texas A&M recruit, set a meet record and took the state lead with her 19-7½ long jump and also won the 300 hurdles and high jump. She missed out on a fourth win, in the 100 high hurdles, when she was disqualified for a uniform violation.

A long-term setback for the Vikings is the loss of two-time 100-meter gold medalist Maia Reynolds. North coach Eric Johnson said Reynolds, a senior, voluntarily has left the team.

Omaha Westside repeated as boys champion, scoring 184 points for a 50-point cushion over runner-up Omaha Benson.

The Warriors won six events. Benson’s Jer’rell Moore set the only boys meet record with a high jump of 6-9.
