A vote on the city’s proposed fire union contract has been delayed until at least July 26.
Mayor Jim Suttle agreed to the delay after a request from the Omaha City Council.
Aida Amoura, Suttle’s spokeswoman, said Wednesday that council members wanted more time to review the contract.
“They had some questions,” Amoura said. “We want to be prepared to answer those questions. We’re being as cooperative as we can.”
The mayor has hailed the deal as putting an end to pension spiking and setting the city’s troubled police and fire pension fund on the path to solvency.
City Councilwoman Jean Stothert has said the administration should wait at least 90 days before putting the fire agreement before the council. She wanted more time to study the contract considering coming changes to the state’s labor court, the Commission of Industrial Relations.
Stothert could not immediately be reached for comment but could still seek an additional delay.
