Officials in Mills County are preparing for possible flooding in the western part of the county.
“There are no earth-shattering issues for us right now,” said Sheri Bowen, public information officer for Mills County Emergency Management. “But we’re working to help folks implement a safety plan for worst-case scenario.”
The most important aspect of preparation, Bowen said, is levee security, evaluation and maintenance.
On Tuesday sand boils occurred on a stretch of levee south of Iowa Highway 370 that were “a little bigger and more of them than normal,” Bowen said. Local levee district staff and the Army Corps of Engineers addressed the problem, she said.
Levee district staff, the Corps of Engineers and members of the Iowa National Guard have inspected the 26 miles of Mills County levees along the Missouri River and Keg Creek in the past few days, according to Mills County Emergency Management officials.
The Clarinda Correctional Facility provided 18 inmates with guards to assist in rodent-hole repair on the levee system.
Bowen said land on the west side of Interstate 29 near the river is experiencing some flooding. “Every day we notice more of that, especially in the southwest part of the county,” she said.
Currently much of 195th Street, Karnes Road between U.S. Highway 34 and the railroad and Nims Road west of 195th Street are closed because of flooding. Portions of the BNSF rail line have been closed intermittently.
Bowen stressed that there are no mandatory or voluntary evacuation orders in the county, though some area residents have decided to leave their homes.
Glenwood is implementing mitigation emergency protection measures at the water plant to ensure ongoing service.
In Pacific Junction, volunteers continue to fill and stage sandbags, the only municipality to do so in the county, Bowen said.
The county flood center has been set up at the department of health building in Glenwood.
The county flood hotline phone number is 712-527-4231 or 211.
