COUNCIL BLUFFS — Although officials in Council Bluffs remain confident that the Missouri River levees will hold, preparations for potential flooding — including identifying additional volunteers and equipment — continue.
Spokeswoman Kris Ranney said the telephone “rang off the hook” at the Council Bluffs Flood Volunteer Center at First Christian Church on Tuesday, and the calls continued at a heavy pace Wednesday. Officials at the volunteer center are still hoping to have additional lines installed by Thursday to handle the volume of calls.
The Flood Volunteer Center has prepared a form that can be filled out by those who wish to help in the battle against the Missouri River. The form, available from the Flood Volunteer Center's website, can be mailed to or dropped off at the Flood Volunteer Center at the First Christian Church, 20794 Highway 92, Council Bluffs, IA 51503.
The Flood Volunteer Center has offered information to consider if you or your organization wishes to assist in flood relief efforts; indicate where you can help on the Help CB Volunteer form:
>> Help is needed now in filling and placing sandbags. Volunteers may be needed to help residents with moving. Those who can operate or provide equipment such as boats, tractors, large trucks and trailers, water pumps, generators, etc., may be needed.
>> Temporary shelter may be needed for evacuated families. Would you consider being a host shelter? Individual homes are welcome to provide temporary shelter for displaced families should the need arise.
The Council Bluffs Volunteer Center at First Christian Church can be reached by telephone at 712-325-4736 or by email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
