Notes: Marchese repeats as seniors champ

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. — A birdie on the final hole Wednesday let Susan Marchese of Omaha shoot par 72 in the final round and repeat as the Nebraska senior women's golf champion.

Marchese, 50, came back from an opening 82 Monday with rounds of 74 and 72 to finish 54 holes at Riverside Golf Club at 12-over 228. She was three strokes ahead of Norfolk's Julie Hall, who shot 74 in the final round.

Pat Linson of Papillion, who was bidding to be a wire-to-wire winner, fell behind Marchese with a double bogey on the fourth hole and finished third, five shots off the lead.

Reinertson opens six-stroke lead

ASHLAND, Neb. — Rylee Reinertson of Gibbon takes a six-stroke lead into Thursday's final round of the AJGA Nebraska Junior at Quarry Oaks after shooting 68 on Wednesday.

Reinertson is at 7-under 135. Nearest to him are Colin Pearson of Fort Dodge, Iowa, at 1 under and Chase Hanna of Leawood, Kan., at even.

Reinertson, who has never won an AJGA event, said he is excited about his chances Thursday. His brother Jordan, now at Nebraska, was a winner in the AJGA.

"I kind of want to win one myself," Reinertson said. "I've worked really hard to get to this point and it's finally nice to see that some of the practice is starting to pay off."

Girls leader Xiaoyu Zhu of Shanghai shot a 2-over 73 for a two-stroke advantage.

NU's Sheils eliminated in match play

BARRINGTON, R.I. — Nebraska senior Madeleine Sheils was eliminated in the opening round of match play by Stephanie Kono at the 111th U.S. women's amateur championship Wednesday.

Sheils was seeded 31st in the 64-player match-play format, and played the No. 34 seed Kono even through 18 holes. Sheils, who matched Kono with a two-round total of 144 in stroke play to make the cut into the match-play field, was knocked out of the competition on the 19th hole of her head-to-head match with Kono.
