Buffett will release tax returns if Murdoch will

WASHINGTON — Warren Buffett agreed Tuesday to comply with the Wall Street Journal's call that he disclose his tax returns.

As long as Rupert Murdoch does the same.

The Journal carried an editorial recently about President Barack Obama's insistence that tax reform follow a "Buffett Rule," that no household making more than $1 million annually should pay a smaller share of its income in taxes than middle-class families.

The editorial suggested that Buffett release his tax returns to illuminate the debate.

CNN reported that Buffett was asked about the editorial at Fortune's Most Powerful Women Summit.

"I think it might be a terrific idea if they would just ask their boss, Rupert Murdoch, and he and I will meet at Fortune, and we'll both give you our tax returns and you can publish them," Buffett said, according to CNN. "I'm ready tomorrow morning."

Omaha's billionaire investor has stated that he pays a lower tax rate than any of the 20 other people in his office, a situation he considers unfair. Republicans, however, have taken issue with his statements and said they want to see his tax returns.
