The Salvation Army got an early start on its annual Red Kettle holiday campaign with a run Saturday at Zorinsky Lake in southwest Omaha.

The Red Kettle Run collected food and donations to help restock the pantry shelves before the holiday season arrives. Each runner and walker was asked to bring 10 non-perishable food items or $10 for the food pantry.

More than 600 runners — up from 400 for the debut of the event last year — brought in 21,400 items for the pantry (up 5,000 items from a year ago).

“We took a big jump from the first year, and we're just thrilled,” said Susan Eustice of the Salvation Army.
