COUNCIL BLUFFS — An organization devoted to helping children and families in need is now asking for help.
A bronze statue that has become the symbol of the organization was taken from Children's Square USA in Council Bluffs overnight, Carol Wood, president of the organization, said Saturday.
The 3.5-foot statue of a happy child running was modeled from a photograph of a former Children's Square student named Jason. It has been a fixture in front of the visitor center on the campus at North Sixth Street and Avenue E since 1991, Wood said.
“I'm just feeling sick that he's missing,” she said.
Children's Square is a non-profit organization that provides care, education and treatment services for children and families. Its main campus is in Council Bluffs, and it also offers programs and services in Omaha and Sioux City, Iowa.
Jason's vibrant spirit became a symbol of the organization and each year, Children's Square gives Jason Awards to people or organizations that exemplify its values and skills.
Anyone with information is urged to contact Council Bluffs police at 712-328-5737, Crime Stoppers at 712-328-7867 or the Children's Square at 712-322-3700.
“Help us bring him home,” Wood said.
