« Go

In last week's story about the top restaurants of 2011, the hours for the Grey Plume were incorrect. The restaurant does not serve lunch. It serves dinner Monday through Saturday from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.

New name for downtown spot

Downtown Omaha's New York Chicken and Gyros has a new name: Block 16.

Owners Jessica Joyce and Paul Urban purchased the restaurant at 1611 Farnam St. with plans to renovate and change the name. Joyce said the couple will make some changes to the decor and the restaurant's menu, which serves their own upscale take on street food.

"Everything has been baby steps," she said. "But we are happy with our progress."

Pizzeria offers its own wine

Pitch Coal Fire Pizzeria is releasing its own wine, called Pitch Black. The wine, described as "a fantastic blend of grapes at a very reasonable price," will be available at the restaurant in the next week or so.

Pitch has half-price bottles of wine during its happy hour, Tuesday through Friday, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., among other specials.

Moroccan Cafe to mark anniversary

Casablanca Moroccan Cafe is celebrating its first birthday with food and live music. On Jan. 26, the restaurant will have live Moroccan entertainment and a specially priced menu. The party will feature a DJ from House of Loom and free cocktails. It takes place at the restaurant, 3025 Farnam St., from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

New manager for Metro program

Erin Vik is the new general manager of the Metropolitan Community College Culinary Arts, Hospitality and Horticulture program. He worked in management at the Hilton Omaha and has taught at the Institute for the Culinary Arts in the past. Joellen Zuk, interim general manager for the past 10 months, will return to teaching full time.

Whole Foods offers classes, tastings

Omaha's Whole Foods Market has a number of cooking classes and tasting events in January.

>> On Jan. 13, the Health Starts Here cooking class will teach students how to cook with foods that taste good and are also healthy. The class is $15 per person.

>> On Jan. 14, the Health Starts Here passport fair sampling event will include foods throughout the store that are both tasty and filled with nutrients. Visitors can pick up a passport and take it to each department for the chance to win a $50 pantry makeover. The samples are free.

>> The Sweet Experiment cooking class on Jan. 16 will educate students about the variety of sweeteners on the market, including honey, agave nectar, maple syrup, stevia and others. Samples of each sweetener will be available as will baked goods and soda that use the different types of sweetener. The class is free.

>> Stephanie Patsalis, author of "Greek Chic Cuisine," will teach a class on light Mediterranean meals that includes recipes for shrimp Santorini with Greek yogurt tzatziki and walnut honey dessert. The Jan. 18 class is $20 per person.

Classes, which take place at the store, 10020 Regency Circle, require pre-registration. Call 402-393-1200 or visit www.wholefoodsmarket.com/omaha for more information.
