Look out for Bomb Digs' hard-to-miss food truck around town.

DINING NOTES

New gourmet street food
« Go

Omaha has a new food truck, and this one is really hard to miss.

Painted neon hues of hot pink, purple, orange, blue, yellow and green and covered with cartoon hamburgers, toast, bananas, a sandwich, carrots and a shrimp, the Bomb Digs Food Truck is serving a wide array of gourmet street food from a shiny, colorful motorhome.

The truck's first day of service was Wednesday. Chef-owner Logan Kesselring said the truck opened at 11 a.m. and all the food was gone in 45 minutes.

"We're striving to serve a new world cuisine," he said. "I take stuff that I like to eat and try to make it appealing to most people while still keeping a gourmet flair."

The menu the first day fit that description: a Porchetta Sandwich, which is a pork loin wrapped in bacon and stuffed with herbs on a bun with spinach, garlic aioli and chicharron, twice-deep-fried pork skin that's puffy and savory; and a red and green enchilada.

Kesselring, whose family is from New Mexico, said the Mexican on the menu is firmly Tex-Mex.

"The taco trucks on South 24th are already doing a great job of authentic Mexican," he said.

The menu will rotate regularly and vary widely. Other offerings he has planned include macaroni and cheese and other pasta dishes, a Jamaican fish sandwich, a variety of burgers, an orange chicken burrito and cheesy risotto balls.

Kesselring previously worked as a chef at Blue Sushi and ran his own catering company.

On weekdays, the truck will be parked at the corner of 72nd and Dodge Streets in the old Border's parking lot. Kesselring said he plans to serve as many lunches as he can during the week. On Friday and Saturday nights, the truck moves downtown, and will be parked at the corner of 13th and Harney Streets in the Baum Hydraulics parking lot.

The truck doesn't have solid hours, but he said he plans to open on weekend nights around 8 p.m. and serve until the food is gone.

What's in that frenchee?

The guys behind Secret Penguin — a local youth branding company — have teamed with B&G Tasty Foods for the Frenchee Club, which is just what it sounds like.

"We would go there all the time and eat their frenchee," said Cody Peterson, Secret Penguin's experience director. "We'd try and think of all the crazy stuff we could put inside a frenchee. They made us one with a peanut butter and jelly sandwich inside and one with cream cheese and jalapenos."

So the guys approached the restaurant about the club: Each month, they'd come up with an idea for a sandwich and serve it just for that month, in limited quantities. They'd invite the public to participate with ideas of their own.

They started in December, with a turkey cranberry frenchee and a side of gravy.

For the rest of January, the restaurant will be serving a Nutella and banana frenchee, which Peterson said has been a big hit.

The prices vary by ingredient, so the Nutella-banana frenchee is $3.99 while the turkey-cranberry was $6.99.

The restaurant makes about 20 frenchees at a time, Peterson said, and when it's a busy day, the custom frenchees aren't always available. After their fourth frenchee, diners get a free T-shirt. For more information, visit bgtastyfoods.com/frenchee. The restaurant is at 79th and Dodge Streets.

Create your own pie

A new pizza place that should open sometime in mid-February — Pizza Pie Guys — aims to please Mom, Dad and any pint-sized picky eaters in the family with its create-your-own pizza menu.

The locally owned restaurant will offer three sizes of pizzas and unlimited toppings without added cost, as well as a number of combination deals that include drinks and salads. It also will have a food truck available to cater private events.

The restaurant will be at 3113 N. 120th St. on the east side of 120th Street between West Maple Road and Blondo. Hours will be Monday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Sunday, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. For more information, visit thepizzapieguys.com.

Boiler Room on break

The Boiler Room will be closed for its annual winter break until Monday.

Chef Paul Kulik said the staff of the restaurant will be in Minneapolis and Chicago during the break to visit some of the top restaurants around the Midwest. It will resume regular business hours after the break.

Burgers for charity

Omaha Steaks has a new Facebook app that benefits a good cause.

The Ultimate Burger Experience App lets users sign in and create their own burger, choosing a bun, a style of patty and close to 50 other toppings.

Once a user creates a virtual burger, they get to choose from one of four charities selected in an earlier poll of Omaha Steaks Facebook fans.

Their burger then gets "donated" to that charity and they can invite other Facebook users to vote for their burger.

Omaha Steaks will donate a minimum of $5,000 to each of the four charitable organizations, and the organization receiving the most virtual burger votes will receive a $25,000 donation.

If the number of Omaha Steaks Facebook fans reaches 225,000 before the end of the promotion, it will give $25,000 to each charity: the Disabled American Veterans, which helps disabled veterans and their families; charity: water, which works to bring clean, safe drinking water to people in developing nations; the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, which promotes research, education and advocacy about multiple sclerosis; and the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, which .is internationally recognized for its pioneering work finding cures and saving children with cancer and other diseases.

The app will be available on the Omaha Steaks Facebook page at Facebook.com/OmahaSteaks until Feb. 29.

Pizzeria lends a hand

A local Sam and Louie's pizza restaurant is helping to renovate an exhibit at the Lincoln Children's Museum.

The Pizzeria Exhibit will be updated and renovated to let kids learn about math, measuring, portions, fractions and weight, as well as nutrition. The Sam and Louie's at 1332 P St. in downtown Lincoln — just a block away from the Lincoln Children's Museum, 1420 P St. — is sponsoring the renovations.

The new exhibit is scheduled to open yet this winter.
