Regents to get NU plans update

WORLD-HERALD BUREAU

LINCOLN — The University of Nebraska Board of Regents was to be briefed Friday on the latest developments on a $450 million plan to build new health-related facilities on the three NU campuses.

The proposal includes a $370 million comprehensive cancer center for the University of Nebraska Medical Center, new nursing instructional facilities at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and the University of Nebraska at Kearney and a new veterinary diagnostic laboratory at UNL.

The building proposals have been bundled together as the “Building a Healthier Nebraska” initiative, and the Legislature has been asked to approve $91 million from the cash reserve fund to help support the project.

During the business meeting Friday afternoon, the regents will be asked to adopt a resolution to support the initiative.

Other items on the meeting agenda include:

— An update on the University of Nebraska at Omaha's master plan for its facilities. Campus leaders have been mulling new uses for its football stadium, now that the football program has been eliminated; as well as new facilities for hockey and other sports. A planning document included with the agenda indicates no decisions have been made.

— A report on campus graduation rates.

— Approval of residence hall rate increases.

— Approval of a new biomechanics research facility at UNO.
