Briefly: Volunteers needed

Event to remember Iwo Jima battle

Rolling Hills Ranch retirement community will host an Iwo Jima remembrance and veterans benefits seminar at 10 a.m. Saturday. Veterans and the public are welcome at the event at 4324 N. 132nd St.

Iwo Jima, site of the famous flag-raising photo, was a pivotal one-month World War II battle between the U.S. and Japan. February marks the 67th anniversary.

Volunteers needed for deer count

Homestead National Monument of America needs volunteers for a deer survey to be conducted Saturday morning at the park four miles west of Beatrice on State Highway 4.

No experience is needed; just show up at the Education Center for a 9:30 a.m. orientation. Wear long pants, a long-sleeved shirt and good walking shoes.

Walkers will hike approximately three-fourths of a mile through the prairie. People who can't walk that far are needed to watch the road west of the monument park and count the deer as they exit.

The survey will be done by noon.

Motorists on Highway 4 need to be alert for deer crossing the highway Saturday morning.
