Dropout law advances

By Martha Stoddard
WORLD-HERALD BUREAU

LINCOLN — The Education Committee has advanced a bill that would require Nebraska students to stay in school until age 18 or graduation.

Current state law allows 16-year-olds to drop out of school with parental permission.

Legislative Bill 996 advanced on a vote of 6-2. It won support from state education officials but was opposed by a family advocacy group.

Earlier this year, President Barak Obama called on states to tighten compulsory education laws in an effort to prevent high school dropouts.
