TEMPE, Ariz. — Nebraska’s softball team fell behind early in its season opener and couldn’t create enough scoring chances to get back in the game, losing 4-0 to No. 12 Washington on Thursday.
Husky sophomore Kaitlin Inglesby was the story of the afternoon. She struck out five and walked two, hurling the fourth shutout of her career. The second-team Pac-12 performer in 2011 also hit a two-run homer to give her team a first-inning lead.
The 21st-ranked Huskers (0-1) didn’t get their first hit until the fifth inning — a one-out single by senior Madison Drake. Their only other hit was sophomore Taylor Edwards’ double in the sixth inning. NU never had a runner advance past second base.
Nebraska pitcher Ashley Hagemann started a bit slowly Thursday, too. The Husker senior walked five and gave up four hits in the first four frames.
Washington (1-0) made it 4-0 on two RBI singles in the third inning. Inglesby nearly hit a grand slam in the fourth, but the fly ball was caught just short of the left- field fence.
Hagemann allowed one base runner in the fifth and sixth innings combined, but by then it was too late.
Action at the Kajikawa Classic will continue Friday. Nebraska’s set to face No. 8 Arizona at 5:30 p.m. before matching up against Idaho State at 8 p.m.
