Sprint's mixed blessing: iPhones

Sprint dug deep into its pockets in the latest quarter to put heavily subsidized iPhones in the hands of its customers. The company on Wednesday posted its largest loss in three years.

Sprint, the No. 3 U.S. wireless carrier, jumped for the chance to sell the iPhone starting in October, giving Apple Inc. a $15.5 billion commitment to buy phones over four years.

In the October-to-December period, Sprint activated 1.8 million iPhones in the quarter and posted a rare increase in the number of subscribers on contract-based plans, which it is counting on to help it absorb the iPhone costs.

Rivals' squabble benefits CVS Caremark

Drugstore chain Walgreen Co.'s loss of a big client is turning into rival CVS Caremark's gain so far this year.

A contract squabble between Walgreens and pharmacy benefits manager Express Scripts Inc. has driven more customers to CVS pharmacies, prompting that company to raise its 2012 earnings forecast by 3 cents per share.

Overall, CVS Caremark's earnings from the fourth quarter of 2011 climbed nearly 4 percent.

Yahoo board undergoes shake-up

Yahoo Chairman Roy Bostock and three longtime board members are stepping down, submitting to the demands of frustrated shareholders who blame them for contributing to the problems that have dragged down the Internet company's revenue and stock price.

The shake-up continues a drastic makeover of Yahoo's leadership during the past month as the company negotiates to sell its Asian assets in a complex deal that could help ignite a long-promised turnaround.
