CRESTON, Iowa (AP) — Crews in the southwestern city of Creston were struggling to reach what appeared to be a plugged sewer line that was causing about 20 gallons of wastewater per minute to be released in an isolated area.
The State Department of Natural Resources said workers discovered the problem Wednesday afternoon in an area about a quarter-mile from a road. Gaining access to the line was difficult and crews were cutting trees to reach the area.
City officials asked that people avoid hiking in the south end of a popular trail near McKinley Lake until workers can complete repairs.
The DNR said it was unclear when the problem began and how much wastewater had been released.
