HOUGHTON, Mich. — UNO entered Friday night's game at Michigan Tech with a chance to break out of a three-way tie for fifth in the WCHA standings and start to clear up the playoff picture.
Instead things are still a little murky.
The Mavs (12-11-6, 9-7-5) played Michigan Tech 13-13-3, 10-8-3) to a 3-3 overtime tie after a penalty-filled second period where Bryce Aneloski and Ryan Walters scored to give UNO a 3-2 lead before Michigan Tech center Jordan Baker's goal evened it up for good.
The tie leaves UNO and Michigan Tech in a tie for sixth place in the WCHA standings with 22 points each. The Mavs and Huskies were sharing fifth place with North Dakota before Friday's games, but a 3-1 win over defending national champion Minnesota-Duluth moved North Dakota up to fourth.
With seven games left the Mavs are still trying to secure home-ice for the WCHA playoffs, which goes to the top six teams at the end of the regular season.
UNO goalie John Faulkner made 26 saves, including 12 in the third period, after relieving starter Ryan Massa early in the first period.
The Huskies got off to a quick start against Massa when defenseman Brad Stebner scored on a shot from the left point just 55 seconds into the game.
Bryce Reddick scored less than five mintues later as the Huskies doubled their lead, prompting UNO coach Dean Blais to send in Faulkner.
The Mavs began to push back after the switch, and trimmed the Huskies' lead when Jayson Megna scored his ninth goal of the season off an assist from Walters.
The Mavericks tied the game just 1:27 into the second period when Aneloski gathered up an errant clearing pass, faked Michigan Tech goalie Josh Robinson down and slipped home his fifth goal of the year. He now has points in six straight games.
UNO took its first lead 7:30 into the second period when Brent Gwidt stole another pass and fired a shot. The rebound jumped to Walters, who scored into a half-empty net to make it 3-2 UNO.
The second period ended with two penalties against Walters following a scrum, a five-minute penalty for checking from behind and a game misconduct call.
The second period saw nine penalties in total, five against Michigan Tech and four against UNO. Despite plenty of power play chances, neither team managed to score at all with a man advantage.
The Huskies tied the game late in the period with the teams skating four-on-four. Baker walked down the right wing and fired a shot past Faulkner to make it 3-3 and send the game to overtime.
Faulkner and Robinson both stopped two shots in the extra period.
UNO and Michigan Tech face off again Saturday at 4:07 for the series finale.
