There are a few ways to celebrate the lover's holiday on Feb. 14 by taking advantage of local events and business specials.
Here are some ideas:
An Evening in Venice is Saturday, Feb. 11, at Gretna United Methodist Church. The fundraiser for the senior high youth group activities will serve meals at 5:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. seatings. Menu includes spaghetti, salad, breadsticks and dessert. Those interested can arrive at either seating or make a reservation by calling the church office or Fred Ridpath at (402) 332-2750.
The Junior High Italian Dinner event was rescheduled for this Saturday, Feb. 11, in the MAC at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. Menu includes spaghetti with either meat, marinara or alfredo sauces, salad and dessert. The dinner will be served from 5 to 8 p.m.
The St. Patrick's Catholic Church Knights of Columbus spaghetti dinner on Sunday. The meal will be served from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Parish Center.
The annual Valentine's dinner fundraiser for the Senior High Youth at Resurrection Evangelical Lutheran Church is set for Sunday, Feb. 12 at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are on sale now so watch for the Senior High Youth who will be selling them.
Guests will have a choice of entrée: plum pork, stuffed chicken breast, enchilda or rollatini with hamburger in tomato sauce or seafood in white sauce.
Tickets are $15 per person and all proceeds will go toward helping fund the Senior High ELCA Youth Gathering to New Orleans in July.
Free babysitting will also be provided.
Flowers
Anything is possible when it comes to floral arrangements at Town and Country Floral, Inc. Owner Linda Hill said people don't have to spend $100 or more. She and her staff can work with a budget.
Consider a flower other than a rose. Hill suggested tulips because she will have many in stock at a good price.
There will be cash-and-carry bundles of flowers available at Town and Country leading up to and on Valentine's Day. Also, receive a complimentary box of chocolates with a purchase.
Sweet dessert
Customers will get a little heart cake with the meal on Feb. 14 at D&K Gretna Cafe. It is a part of the lunch special that day.
One stop shop
A variety of gifts are available at McKinney's Food Center for the holiday. Fresh bouquets of flowers priced $6.99 and higher will be at the grocery store starting on Friday.
Or, think about giving a helium balloon bouquet. Co-owner Mary McKinney said they use Hi-Float treatment to make the balloon stay up in the air longer than a balloon without the treatment.
Don't forget to add a greeting card and candy of all sorts.
Get loose
Consider taking time out together for a couple's massage. The special promotion "Table for Two" is available at Skilled Touch Massage in Gretna. For $120, a couple can enjoy a 60-minute massage of wellness. Call (402) 670-5427 for more information.
Valentine's gifts
Gretna's Post Prom Committee is selling sweetheart boxes of candy for Valentine's Day as a fundraiser.
Boxes, with either sour cherry balls or conversation hearts, will be delivered to students and employees at Gretna Public Schools on Feb. 13 and 14.
Order forms can be found online at www.gretnadragons.org and within the printable flyers under the elementary school webpages.
Cost is $5 per box.
Order deadline is today, Feb. 8. Questions are directed to Cindy at (402) 332-5026.
