Bruins drop two to Mount Mercy in Minnesota

MINNEAPOLIS — In the season opener for the Bellevue University baseball team, Mount Mercy recorded a doubleheader sweep with wins of 3-0 and 4-3 in nine innings.

In the nightcap, Jeff Dorman drove in the final two runs of the game, including the game-winner in the top of the ninth for the Mustangs (3-1).

Spencer Duggan's solo home run in the bottom of the sixth gave Bellevue a 3-2 advantage, but Mount Mercy responded in the top of the seventh with Dorman's RBI single to make it 3-3. Dorman then added another RBI single in the ninth to cap the sweep.

Duggan led the Bruin offense, going 2 for 4 with a double and a home run while scoring a pair of runs.

Junior right-hander Phil Hotchkiss tossed a one-hitter in the opener. Hotchkiss allowed three base runners, recording two strikeouts and one walk.

Senior Josh Trejo suffered the loss, scattering six hits, while striking out five and walking three.
