CARBONDALE, Ill. — Creighton shot a season-high 52.8 percent from the field to earn an 80-64 win over Southern Illinois on Saturday afternoon.
Sarah Nelson, who had scored 23 points Thursday at Evansville, led the Bluejays (13-11, 7-6 MVC) with a career-high 25 points. Carli Tritz added 19 points on 8-of-13 shooting and tied her career high with six of Creighton’s 12 steals.
After making just 3 of 10 shots to start the game, Creighton finished the first half 15 of 30 from the field to build a 37-28 lead over the Salukis (7-17, 3-10).
The Bluejays held a double-digit lead through much of the second half, building their lead to 56-40. An 11-2 run got the Salukis within seven with 8:31 to play, but Jasmin Corbin hit a pull-up jumper to start a 6-0 run, and SIU never got the margin back to single digits.
The win was Creighton’s ninth straight in the series. The Bluejays’ 80 points were a season high, and Saturday’s game was the first time this season the Bluejays shot better than 50 percent from the field.
Freshman Cartaesha Macklin led the Salukis with 21 points, nine rebounds and six assists.
Creighton will return home for its final two home games of the season, hosting Illinois State on Friday and Indiana State on Sunday. Friday’s game against the Redbirds will be Creighton’s annual “Pink Out” game and Sunday is Senior Day.
