Mavs in tie for fourth after win

Box Score: UNO 4, Michigan Tech 0

HOUGHTON, Mich. — After a missed opportunity Friday night, UNO took a big step toward reaching its postseason goals Saturday.

Mavs goalie Ryan Massa posted his first collegiate shutout as UNO earned a 4-0 win over Michigan Tech.

The win moves the Mavs into a tie for fourth place in the WCHA standings with Colorado College. UNO (13-11-6, 10-7-5) entered the game in a tie for sixth place with the Huskies (13-14-3, 10-9-3), who dropped to seventh after the loss.

With six games left the Mavs are trying to secure home-ice for the WCHA playoffs, which goes to the top six teams at the end of the regular season.

Massa made 35 saves against the Huskies, including stopping 18 shots in the third period. The shutout was a big turnaround from his performance in Friday's 3-3 tie, when Massa was pulled just 5:15 into the first period after giving up two quick goals on four shots.

Massa was particularly strong in the third period when the Huskies fired 18 shots on goal. Massa also held the Huskies scoreless on four power plays.

Matt White led the UNO offense with two consecutive goals.

After a scoreless first period, the Mavericks took the lead at 6:54 of the second period when White fired a wrist shot past Michigan Tech goalie Josh Robinson.

White scored again to open UNO's three-goal third period when he broke down the right wing and fired a wrist shot from the top of the circle inside the far post. The goal was White's 15th of the season, a new career high.

Jayson Megna stretched the lead to 3-0 with his 10th goal of the season, a long wrist shot from inside the blue line.

Michael Young scored UNO's final goal when he kept a clearing attempt at the right point and fired a shot that was deflected by a Michigan Tech defender past Robinson for a shorthanded goal.

Robinson finished the night with 27 saves on 31 shots.

For winning the series, the Mavericks won the John MacInnes Trophy as Michigan Tech's Winter Carnival champions. White was named the MVP of the weekend.

The Mavericks stay on the road to face Colorado College on Feb. 17 and 18. They will be the final road games of the season for the Mavs.
