Sunshine won't budge freezing temps

Don’t be fooled by the sunshine Saturday.

AccuWeather.com, the World-Herald’s weather consultant, said the high temperature Saturday should hit 18 degrees around 3 p.m., but it will feel like a whopping 8 degrees. The real feel probably won’t escape the single digits, according to AccuWeather.com.

“That north wind is just enough to put an extra bite in the air,” said David Pearson, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service office in Valley, Neb. “It’s a nice sunny day that would be better observed from the inside.”

If you have to venture outdoors, cover up, Pearson said. Very cold air and wind can result in frost bite and lead to hypothermia.

There was a wind chill advisory that included Douglas, Sarpy and Pottawattamie counties until 8 a.m. Saturday.

Saturday morning temperatures bottomed out around -3 degrees, but with the wind chill, it felt more like -20, Pearson said.

Pearson said the wind should slowly diminish Saturday. A snow system headed this way should pull the temperature on Sunday back up to the low 30s, a normal winter temperature for the Omaha metro area, Pearson said.
