STANTON, Neb. — The Stanton County Board member who resigned in October over questions about his residency was arrested Friday.
William Goodpasture was taken into custody on a warrant for false candidate filing, according to Stanton County Sheriff Mike Unger. The felony offense is punishable by up to 20 years in prison.
The charges were filed by Knox County Attorney John Thomas, who was appointed to be a special prosecutor after an investigation by the Nebraska State Patrol.
Goodpasture is scheduled to appear in Stanton County Court on March 1, Unger said.
Goodpasture had served for nearly five years representing District 1 when it was disclosed in October that he was under investigation by the State Patrol.
In December, Goodpasture filed to run for the District 3 seat. That's the district he reportedly was living in when he resigned.
The District 3 seat is held by Jerry Weatherholt, who is currently the board chairman. Weatherholt has filed for re-election.
Both Weatherholt and Goodpasture are registered as Republicans, which means they would face each other in the May primary.
David Gutshall, one of 11 applicants, was chosen by a three-member committee last year to finish Goodpasture's term.
