A shuttered power plant is being dismantled at Scottsbluff, at a cost of nearly $1 million.

The Nebraska Public Power District board on Friday voted to spend $968,500 tearing down the Scottsbluff Generating Station, which closed in 1989. According to NPPD, salvaging metals from the site will offset the costs of demolition.

Bierlein Companies, Inc., of Midland, Mich., will demolish and salvage the plant, which generated electricity by burning fuel oil. Work is to begin in March and be completed in November.

The power plant began operating in 1940 and was expanded three times afterward. It had a total capacity of 47 megawatts, a small facility.

Some demolition has previously occurred.

NPPD Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Tom Kent said hazardous materials will be handled in accordance with safety and environmental regulations. Asbestos would be the typical type of hazardous waste, according to NPPD.

The utility hopes to salvage boilers, generators, fuel oil storage tanks and piping.
