DES MOINES (AP) — A Des Moines minister says a marquee listing for a coming sermon against homosexuality has drawn protests and threats.
The Rev. Michael Demastus of Fort Des Moines Church of Christ said the title of his sermon Sunday is "Gay is not okay." That's what he put on the marquee in front of his church.
Criticism and a picture of the marquee were posted on Facebook. They elicited several condemnations from people who objected to the statement. Another posting said a protest has been scheduled at the church.
Demastus said he knew his title was provocative. But he said he doesn't intend to condemn homosexuals. Rather, he said, he is condemning homosexuality.
Demastus says he's talked to police about the planned protest, which he says is welcome outside the church.
