Sixth grader Lily Yates tackled more than 220 words Saturday to claim the title of champion in the Metro Catholic Schools Spelling Bee.
Lily, 12, a student at St. Wenceslaus School, is the daughter of Bill and Kirsten Yates. She was among 47 youngsters from 27 Omaha-area Catholic schools who participated.
Patrick Fayad, 11, a fifth grader at Christ the King, placed second.
Third place went to Jacob Koperski, 13, an eighth grader at St. Wenceslaus. The fourth place finisher was Tim Urbanski, 13, a seventh grader from St. James Seton School. First through fourth place finishers were awarded trophies.
The bee was held at St. Stephen the Martyr in Omaha. — Kirby Kaufman
