Omaha Time Capsule: Raising speed questioned

What happened in the Midlands on this day? Here's a sampling from the World-Herald archives.

TIEMANN: RAISING SPEED IS BAD IDEA

Feb. 13, 1981: The Legislature would be taking "a very, very short-sighted position" if it decides to boost the speed limit above 55 mph, Norbert Tiemann said. Tiemann was a former Nebraska governor and former head of the Federal Highway Administration. "The law is very clear," Tiemann said, that a state's refusal to enforce the 55-mph speed limit jeopardizes millions of dollars in federal highway construction funds, he said. "Why tempt fate?"

1941: Omaha and Sarpy County, each seeking Fort Crook bomber plant zoning authority, fought it out in the democratic way in a public hearing on four bills before a legislative committee. There was vigorous debate with a note of compromise from both sides. Sen. William Metzger of Cedar Creek, fathering the bill to give Sarpy County authority, said his constituents resented Omaha's efforts to extend its authority into their realm.

1991: The Lied Center for Performing Arts shut down its only elevator providing access for people with physical handicaps about a month after the facility opened because the elevator was considered unsafe. The elevator was intended to transport people with physical handicaps and in wheelchairs from the lobby to the first-floor wheelchair seating area. Mark Johnson, Lied's facility manager, said the elevator was shut down after UNL officials determined it was unsafe and the center's insurance company said the university might be held liable if an accident occurred.

2001: The Papillion-La Vista Board of Education set an August 2003 opening date for a new elementary school, making it the second new school that will open that month. After also considering 2002 and 2004, the board voted to set August 2003 for the opening date of its new elementary school a few blocks north of Giles Road on 101st Street in La Vista. The district's new high school also will open in August 2003.
