Boy sentenced in assault of siblings

A second boy was sentenced to probation and sex offender treatment for coercing a 5-year-old girl into performing sex acts on her 6-year-old brother and the assailant's friend.

The boy, now 13, was one of two assailants who used threats and intimidation to force the girl to commit the sex acts.

The boys, 12 and 13 at the time and now 13 and 14 years old, videotaped and took pictures of the assaults with their cellphones.

Douglas County Juvenile Court Judge Wadie Thomas Jr. imposed the sentence on the 13-year-old — essentially the same term the judge gave to the boy's 14-year-old friend last week.

Thomas sentenced them to probation for an indefinite period of time and ordered them to enroll in a sex offender treatment program.

Failure to follow the terms could result in the boys being removed from their parents' home and sent to a detention facility, the judge ruled.

The assailants were found responsible — Juvenile Court's version of a guilty finding — on two counts of first-degree sexual assault of a child and a related pornography charge after a trial in which the victims were forced to recount the acts.

The incident occurred June 14 at a small park in the Deerwood-Avalon neighborhood. The 5- and 6-year-old siblings had ridden their bikes there, and that's where they encountered the two older boys.

The older boys took the siblings down an embankment to a large sewer drain, out of sight, where the assaults occurred.

The victims' parents have been outspoken since the assaults occurred, saying they wanted to shed light on child sex assaults and the trauma victims endure.
