Truck flips over bridge rail, injures 2

WORLD-HERALD NEWS SERVICE

NORFOLK — Two Northeast Community College students were seriously injured Tuesday following a one-vehicle crash near the school.

Braden Baseggio, 19, of O'Neill was ejected from the vehicle and Wade Oltjenbruns, 20, of Creighton had to be extricated from the vehicle by Norfolk rescue crews, said Norfolk Police Chief Bill Mizner.

They were flown by helicopter to Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City.

Baseggio was listed in critical condition Tuesday night, a hospital spokeswoman said. Oltjenbruns was in good condition.

Rescue workers responded to the crash in the 300 block of East Benjamin Avenue at 10:46 a.m. The person reporting the accident said a pickup truck flipped over the guardrail on a bridge.

Police found a white 2004 Dodge Ram pickup resting on its roof below the bridge, Mizner said.

The driver was eastbound on Benjamin Avenue and lost control, striking the guardrail on the south approach to the bridge. The pickup went over the guardrail and rolled down an embankment, Mizner said.

Slick road conditions may have contributed to the accident, he said.
