Area spellers ready for bee

Three spellers will advance to next month's Midwest Spelling Bee after winning their respective district contests.

Spencer Sosalla-Bahr, an eighth-grader at Millard North Middle School, qualified by winning the Millard school district's bee. He is the son of Jeff and Kim Sosalla-Bahr.

Karin Berg, a sixth-grader at Swanson Elementary, qualified by winning the Westside district's contest. She is the daughter of Brett and Evi Berg.

Miles Kay, a seventh-grader at McMillan Magnet Middle School, won the Omaha Public Schools bee. His parents are Charles and Laurie Kay.

The World-Herald's Midwest Spelling Bee will be March 10 at Creighton University's Harper Center, featuring nearly 80 top spellers from Nebraska and western Iowa. The spelling bee is open to the public.

The Midwest Spelling Bee winner will go to Washington, D.C., for the Scripps National Spelling Bee May 27-29. The trip will be paid for by The World-Herald, which has sponsored the Midwest Spelling Bee since 1929.
