Courthouse security finds sword in cane

Justice may be blind.

Good thing courthouse security isn't.

Security officers working the metal detectors Tuesday at the Douglas County Courthouse say they detected an unusual piece of metal.

A cane-sword.

You read that right: A courthouse visitor was trying to bring in a 3-foot-long sword disguised as a cane. The device uses the cane's long leg as a sheath to hide the blade.

Courthouse security officers stopped the 52-year-old man and called in sheriff's deputies to seize the sword and interview him.

The man told deputies he was using it as a wardrobe accessory, not a weapon. Deputies ticketed him on suspicion of carrying a concealed weapon.

Remarkably, officers said, it isn't the first time they've seized a cane-sword.

"They pick up a lot of crazy stuff," said Marty Bilek, chief deputy Douglas County sheriff.
