Levee repairs close river trails

Some trails along the Missouri River levee system will be closed until further notice, Mayor Jim Suttle's administration said Friday.

Now closed are:

— A segment of the Riverfront Trail stretching from the Missouri River Wastewater Treatment Plant in South Omaha north to Leavenworth Street.

— A segment of trail from Ida Street to John J. Pershing Drive.

— A small stretch of trail south of the National Parks Service Building.

— A segment of trail stretching from Mormon Bridge Road through N.P. Dodge Park.

Heavy equipment and construction crews are working to repair a levee system weakened by last year's flooding.

City officials say concerns over trail users' safety prompted the closures. Barricades are now up to keep people away from the construction site, the mayor's administration said.

The city's Parks and Recreation Department says its goal is to reopen the trails by March 31.
