A four-lane stretch of South 24th Street coming out of downtown Omaha is about to go on a "road diet."
The City of Omaha won a $1.2 million grant from the Nebraska Department of Roads to take a four-lane street down to three lanes between Leavenworth and L Streets. The extra space would be given over to dedicated bike lanes and nicer sidewalks along the stretch.
The project is estimated to cost $1.47 million. The city will pay the difference through city street funding.
This week, the Roads Department also announced an Omaha grant for creation of a bicycle safety program aimed at people who ride in "mixed traffic" areas. The Metropolitan Area Planning Agency and Activate Omaha will cooperate on the $207,500 project.
The safety courses will be provided for adults as well as for children.
