In the book “At War, At Home: World War II,” The World-Herald takes a special look back at the Nebraskans and Iowans who helped the nation win a war.
The 350-page book, filled with gripping stories and compelling photographs from 70 years of coverage, recounts the sacrifice and commitment of a remarkable generation of Americans. The book, which costs $29.95, can be ordered online here.
The World-Herald is planning a second "At War, At Home" book, this one focusing on the Cold War.
"At War, At Home: World War II," published last fall, featured stories of some of the Nebraskans and western Iowans who served on the battlefronts and pitched in on the home front.
The new book will track the Cold War years, from the establishment of the Strategic Air Command headquarters in Nebraska to the battlefields of Korea and Vietnam.
As part of the effort, we are seeking written memories and photos from:
» Korean War veterans
» Vietnam War veterans
» Men and women who served with the Strategic Air Command from 1948, when headquarters moved to Offutt Air Force Base, to 1992
» Nebraskans and western Iowans who worked in support roles on the home front
Some of the submissions will be edited and published in the book while others will be featured in The World-Herald or on Omaha.com's At War, At Home page.
The history of this period also will be told through the newspaper's archives of coverage beginning in 1946, when Winston Churchill used the term "Iron Curtain" during a speech in Fulton, Mo.
The Cold War eventually wound to a close with the dismantling of the Soviet Union.
"It was a 40-year war to the death, and we won," Gen. Lee Butler, SAC's commander in chief, told an Air Force crowd on the eve of SAC's dissolution in 1992. "You are not just a part of history. ... You have shaped it."

YOUR RANK, BRANCH OF SERVICE (or role as a civilian): As it was when you left the service
UNIT: Including where you were based (for Navy, include ship's name)
YEARS: Including those in combat zone and in service
HOMETOWN: In Nebraska or western Iowa
MEMORY: Can include combat, friends, everyday life in the service; coming home
