Former Nebraska congressional candidate Jim Esch has waded into the Omaha area's Democratic primary battle.
Esch on Monday backed John Ewing Jr., in an email blast to raise money for the Douglas County Treasurer.
In it, Esch said he believes Ewing can defeat Republican U.S. Rep. Lee Terry.
Ewing is running against State Sen. Gwen Howard for the Democratic nomination in the 2nd Congressional District.
The primary is set for May 15.
Terry, who faces primary competition from three other Republicans, recently announced he would seek an eighth term.
Esch mounted bids against Terry in 2006 and 2008. The closest race was in 2008, when Esch came within 4 percentage points of unseating Terry.
