Caution urged for slick commute

Authorities urged Omaha-area motorists to use caution while driving to work Tuesday morning after overnight wet conditions combined with near-freezing temperatures to leave some roads icy .

At least five Interstate 80 accidents early Tuesday forced police to issue their warning concerning the morning rush-hour commute.

It appeared that slick conditions may have led to the five I-80 accidents between 4:30 and 6:30 a.m., prompting authorities' warning: I-80 at I Street, I-480 at Eighth Street, I-480 at 14th Street, all affecting westbound traffic; I-480 and I-80, affecting eastbound traffic; and I-680 and Blair High Road, affecting northbound traffic.

At least four other accidents before 6:30 a.m., possibly due to icy conditions, tied up traffic: 45th and Harrison Streets, 93rd and Harrison, the JFK Expressway at F Street and 72nd and Cass Streets.
