PLATTSMOUTH, Neb. — A 29-year-old man was sentenced Tuesday to 18 months of probation and three weekends in jail after pleading no contest in the assault of a Union Village Board member.
Steve Bescheinen of Union, Neb., agreed to plead no contest to misdemeanor charges of third-degree assault and criminal mischief, in exchange for the dismissal of felony charges of making terroristic threats and strangulation.
Bescheinen admitted that he attacked David Chipman on July 23 in a local bar.
Cass County District Judge Randall Rehmeier said Bescheinen must spend three consecutive weekends in jail, totaling nine days. Rehmeier also ordered Bescheinen to pay $20 for damage to Chipman's cellphone.
A prosecutor said Bescheinen put his arm around Chipman's neck, choked him, spit on him, made several verbal threats and broke his cellphone when he tried to hand it to his wife to call the sheriff.
Bescheinen told deputies that he was angry about Chipman's support of a pending lawsuit filed by the Village Board that seeks to require his father to clean up several properties.
