An auto accident Saturday morning pushed a parked car into the entrance of the Stephen Center in south Omaha, causing thousands of dollars in damage to the homeless shelter.

At least one person was injured in the car that caused the wreck at 2723 Q St. just before 2 a.m.

Brickwork at the Stephen Center was smashed and siding damaged. The automobile pushed in the entrance by about 2 feet.

Paul Vadovski, a temporary resident of the Stephen Center, parked his 1997 Cadillac along Q Street Friday night, in front of the homeless shelter.

Then it got walloped and wedged into the building.

“That car was the only thing I had,” said Vadovski, 41. He is four days from moving into his own apartment in Omaha.

Vadovski said that during the day he is an apprentice doing electrical work in Blair, and at night he takes classes at an Omaha union hall. How he'll get to work and class now is unclear.

“It's huge, because if I can't get to work, I can't pay the rent,” he said.

Del Bomberger, chief executive officer of the Stephen Center, said he might have to temporarily make another door the building's entrance, and move the food giveaway spot elsewhere in the building.

“It could have been worse, I guess,” Bomberger said. “Crazy.”
