Omaha Creighton Prep and the Omaha Westside girls were crowned team champions at the state high school championship meet at the Devaney Center in Lincoln.
After setting scoring records the past three seasons, what Omaha Creighton Prep coach Tom Beck said Saturday about the Junior Jays latest boys state swimming and diving team title might strike some as surprising.
“In my recollection this might be the best state meet we've had in many, many years,” Beck said. “It's the best second day I can remember.”
Prep swimmers won two relays and had plenty of fresh faces step in and replace the 12 seniors from the record-setting 2011 team as the Junior Jays easily won their sixth consecutive state title at the Devaney Center and 14th in school history.
On the girls side, a whole lot of ups and very few downs moved Omaha Westside to the top step of the awards stand Saturday at the state high school girls swimming and diving championship meet.
The Warriors defeated four-time defending champion Millard West 195-178 because they were able to either hold or improve their places from Friday's preliminary round in Saturday's championship and consolation races at the Devaney Center.
That 17-point edge was the eighth-narrowest margin of victory — including a tie for the 1982 title — in the 39-year history of the girls meet.
