Player Card: NU recruit Johnny Stanton
Recruits: 2013 Husker commits

California-based quarterback coach Steve Calhoun has tutored elite quarterbacks of all age groups and can spot that “it” factor in a young quarterback.
One of those quarterbacks was 2013 Nebraska commit Johnny Stanton, who Calhoun first saw as a middle schooler in Southern California and again in early July when Stanton worked out for Calhoun with Nebraska quarterback Taylor Martinez.
“The one thing he does is competes,” Calhoun said of Stanton. “When the lights come on — and though he might not have the best footwork or the best motion — he gets it done. He's super accurate with the football when the lights are on.”
The lights will be plenty bright this week as Stanton competes in the finals of the Elite 11 quarterback competition, which started Wednesday near Los Angeles. The prestigious event features 25 of the country's top senior quarterbacks locked in five days of competition. The finals will be televised Aug. 7 and 14 on ESPN.
Stanton, a dual-threat quarterback who committed to Nebraska on July 9, threw for 2,439 yards and 13 touchdowns, and rushed for 1,428 yards and 21 touchdowns as he led Santa Margarita Catholic High School to a state title in his first season as the starting quarterback.
