It's hot — like, really hot — and it's time for some summer songs, the kind of tracks that we play when we're off work, out of school or taking a long weekend.
These are my favorite new songs that not only came out in time for the warm weather, but also evoke some kind of summery feel.
“This Summer” by Superchunk
Not only does this tune have a punchy guitar riff that sounds perfect for hitting the beach, it's all about packing up the car and hitting the beach with “a tape full of hits” in the tape deck. If you haven't done this (or aren't doing it this summer), you should do it this weekend.
“Some Nights” by Fun.
Though “We Are Young” may be the band's signature song, “Some Nights” has a drum circle-style beat and sing-along verses and chorus. The “oh-oh, oooh-oh, ooh-oh, oh-oh” backing vocal helps, too.
“Heaven” by The Walkmen
The title track from the band's new album is jangly and perfect for a long summer drive, if not for a day at the beach.
“Whistle” by Flo Rida
Gimmicky whistled melody? Yep, but there's something about this song that is light and airy and kind of perfect for the time of year when you're a little more carefree.
“Little Talks” by Of Monsters and Men
The horn melody and the “Hey!” shouts grab you right off the bat and the duet vocals keep you hanging around through the end.
“I Can Only Imagine” by David Guetta feat. Lil Wayne, Chris Brown
Guetta's a pretty masterful pop producer and this is a great song for da club.
“Call Me Maybe” by Carly Rae Jepsen
I'm not sure how many times I can write about this song, but it's incredibly pervasive. It's also weirdly catchy and — I'm not sure how — I'm not sick of it. Yet.
“5-1-5-0” by Dierks Bentley
This is my country summer song. Bentley has this type of adventurous, shuffling, sing-along country song mastered.
“I Feel Better” by Gotye
Anyone who thinks this isn't the best song on Gotye's “Making Mirrors” album needs to relisten to the record. “I Feel Better” is a throwback sort of song, but it does make you feel good.
“Burn It Down” by Linkin Park
A perfect song to take the field/court for any player or team. Do any MLB teams use this as their entrance song? They should.
