BEATRICE — It's a trip to state for the golfing girls of YHS … all of them.
The entire varsity rotation qualified for the 2012 state tourney in Lincoln by virtue of finishing third in the B-3 District on Monday at Beatrice.
Two Dukes, Cassie Sikes and Carlee Beaver, would have qualified individually by virtue of their high finishes even if the whole team had not made the cut.
Sikes finished eighth in B-3 with a card 51-52, 103 on the day. Beaver went out in 53, shot 52 on the inward nine and landed in a four-way tie for 10th at 105.
Hannah Hotovy posted the third-best Duke score with a card of 51-58, 109, good enough to get her into a three-way tie at 17th. Sarah Fangmeyer's 58-53, 111 also counted in York's team tally and was 20th on the leaderboard.
Callie Rathjen shot a matched brace of 64s and finished at 128 in a tie for 31st.
The host Lady Orange won the district title with a team score of 381, but a solid stick from Seward, Lindsey Placke, took the individual title in a playoff against Beatrice's Danielle Havekost. Both players shot 86 to force the extra holes.
Jessica Weickert of Beatrice was third (92) with Murphy Sears of Crete (94) and Hannah Kunzman from Beatrice (96) competing the top five.
Adams Central was second to Beatrice with a score of 418.
Coach Josh Miller said his Dukes' score of 428 for third came on a windy day, “But luckily there was no rain to deal with.
It was a total team effort today as seniors Sarah Fangmeyer and Hannah Hotovy shot scores low enough to keep us in the hunt.”
Miller said Rathjen “showed some improvement today with her swing and gained valuable experience at a tough course.
I am very proud of how this group bounced back after a disappointing finish at conference on Friday. They were focused and ready to go!”
State play begins Monday for the Dukes at Mahoney Golf Course in Lincoln.
Rathjen goes off at 9:40 a.m. with Fangmeyer set to hit her opening shot at 9:50 a.m. Hotovy's tee time is 10:30 a.m., Beaver's is at 10:50 a.m. and Sikes goes off at 11:20. All five Dukes will begin Thursday's round at No. 10 tee box.
