Millard West seniors Sidney Hirsch and Joe Harter ran away from their competition Thursday at the Metro Conference cross country championships.
After Hirsch finished nearly a minute ahead of the next runner to reclaim the Metro title she first won as a freshman, Harter followed with a 32-second win.
With Austin Post giving the Wildcats a 1-2 finish, Millard West won the boys team title for the fourth time in five years.
Omaha Marian was the girls champion for the first time since its record streak of seven in a row culminated in 2007.
Meet officials changed the course at Walnut Creek Recreation Area from last year, which resulted in flatter ground for the start and finish.
For Hirsch, that was a welcomed move.
“I was a little nervous at the start because usually this course gave me a little trouble,'' she said. “Since it wasn't the same, maybe that helped me.”
She missed last year's race with an infected foot. Last year's winner, Katie Spencer of Millard South, will miss the entire season because of an injury.
Harter said he lowered his personal-best time for the course by 45 seconds, winning in 15:46.
“It's the first time I won the conference championship. It feels a little bittersweet,'' he said.
Millard West had Lane Wood take sixth and Adam Wendel ninth as it won with 41 points. Omaha Creighton Prep was runner-up with 58.
Marian, which led Papillion-La Vista South 59-68, had Allison McLeay finish third and Simone Duryea take eighth.
