LINCOLN — It was Senior Day at the Class B girls golf state tournament.
McCook senior Kaylee Samway made five birdies Tuesday at Mahoney Golf Course for a 1-under-par 71 and a share of the 36-hole Class B scoring record.
Elkhorn South seniors Annie Pearson and Alexa Ruwe helped the Storm to a repeat team title. In the duo's three years at the school, the Storm was state runner-up in 2010 and champion the next two years.
“When we have our team banquet, I'll be a teary-eyed mess,” Storm coach Mimi Ramsbottom said. “We started at Elkhorn High together and then jumped ship to Elkhorn South when it opened.”
Samway's 4-over 148 score for 36 holes matched the record set in 2004 at Indianhead Golf Club in Grand Island by another Bison golfer, Katherine Morell. She was one stroke from Morell's 18-hole record of 70.
“I shot par here in the summer,” Samway said, “But it was a lot warmer then.”
Samway was 3-under par on the back nine during the tournament. She said she made a 50-foot putt for birdie on the seventh hole and had another birdie putt of about 20 feet.
“Today it was all about putting,” she said. “Toward the end of the season I was struggling with the driver, but today I hit it pretty straight.”
She finished nine strokes ahead of Elkhorn South junior Nicolle Barmettler, who missed last season with a back injury that required surgery. Pearson, last year's winner, was third.
Another team title was more than merely consolation for Pearson.
“This year we weren't sure if we could do it because we lost two good scorers from last year's team,” she said.
In what might be a tournament first, all five Elkhorn South golfers received medals as top-15 finishers. Lindsey Thompson, a sophomore, tied for seventh. Ruwe tied for 11th and Kathryn Hanson, a junior, tied for 14th.
“I thought today I needed to be ready to put out fires on the course,” Ramsbottom said. “But we had gained a few strokes at the turn and I told each of them that, hey, you can breathe now.”
The Storm won by 35 strokes over runner-up McCook, which lost to the Storm by only eight strokes in 2011.
