KEARNEY, Neb. — Marissa DeWispelare’s runaway Class D cross country title bore no resemblance Friday to last year’s finish.

The David City Aquinas senior needed no final kick, as she did in beating three-time champion Andrea Weeder in 2011, while winning by 38 seconds over runner-up Dani Riesberg of seven-time champion Crofton.

“It’s one of those things where you knew everybody has a target on your back,” DeWispelare said. “That can either motivate you or scare you and I tried to use it to motivate me this year.”

In the boys race, senior Cody Franklin gave Bridgeport its first individual champion. Nebraska Christian won its second team title in three years.

DeWispelare said she thought she was overdressed for the race, wearing Spandex under her uniform, until she felt the first gust of wind.

“That’s when I said it was a good choice.”

Crofton had four of the top 14 finishers as the Warriors extended their Class D record for consecutive girls titles to seven. But the school record is eight, from 1981 to 1988 in Class C. That will have to wait until next year for the three underclassmen in Friday’s lineup.

The Warriors’ score of 23 points was the best in Class D since Morrill’s record 19 in 2002. Besides Riesberg, Kendy Kube was seventh, Quinn Wragge 13th and Tiffany Tramp 14th.

Bridgeport’s Franklin, who was fourth as a junior, was runner-up in his district last week.

“Today was better running on my part and better strategy,’’ Franklin said. “Winning is absolutely amazing. I trained four years for this.”

Nebraska Christian had a 2-3-4 finish with Jahn Landrigan, Hans Epp and Warren Dexter. The Eagles had 46 team points to 71 for runner-up Ainsworth.
