After dropping its first set of the day 25-22 to Morrill, the Mitchell volleyball team settled in to win the Western Trails Conference Tournament on Saturday at Hemingford after going on to defeat the Lions 2-1 (22-25, 25-7, 25-22), Gordon Rushville 2-0 (25-17, 25-5), and Kimball 2-1 (25-15, 22-25, 25-18).
With the wins, the Tigers improve their season record to 20-7. Additionally, it’s the third-straight 20-win season for Mitchell.
“That was the best volleyball I’ve seen out of those girls all season,” Mitchell coach Michelle Peters said. “These kids played their hearts out. They played hard, they practiced hard this past week, they knew where they wanted to be after a sluggish start, and they remembered why they were there and what they needed to do. There was no stopping them. They played the best defense that we’ve played all season long in one tournament.”
In the first-round matches, Bridgeport defeated Hemingford 24-14, 28-26; Gordon-Rushville defeated Bayard 25-23, 18-25, 25-17. The semifinals had Kimball beating Bridgeport 21-25, 25-17, 25-11.
In the consolation match, Gordon-Rushville edged Bridgeport 25-23, 13-25, 25-19 for third place in the tournament.
Mitchell was led in the tournament by Taylor Peters with 38 kills, four ace serves, 34 digs and 18 points. Chalsey Grentz finished with 17 points, five ace serves, 56 set assists and 42 digs. Also for the Tigers, Michaela Karpen and Morgan Michael had seven ace blocks apiece; Arissa Gabel had 44 digs; Felina Blanco had 27 digs; and Brianne Hessler had nine ace serves and 26 digs.
Bridgeport was paced by Sydney Faessler with 10 kills, four ace serves and 44 set assists, while Jamie Schneider had eight kills and five blocks. Jessica Kildow had eight kills and 27 digs; Aimee Hass had 14 kills; and Brooke Schneider had 48 digs and three ace serves.
