Creighton earned an expected spot in the Associated Press preseason rankings. The Bluejays will start the season at No. 16.
The rankings likely earned an expected reaction from coaches and players: nice, but hardly important at this point in the season.
“One of the things we learned last season was to take things in stride,” coach Greg McDermott said. “We talked about it the first week we were ranked, because it had been awhile since Creighton had been back in the rankings.
“It was a milestone, but after that, we paid little attention to it. I'm pretty confident the guys won't pay any attention to it this year.”
The Bluejays spent 11 weeks in the AP poll last season, rising as high as 13th during the week of Jan. 30. They finished the season ranked 19th, and return nine of 10 regulars, including first-team All-American Doug McDermott.
Creighton also was ranked 15th in the coaches poll released last week.
The AP preseason ranking is only the second for Creighton. The Bluejays started 2006-07 ranked 19th. Creighton's position this season also is the highest preseason ranking for a Missouri Valley Conference team since the 1981-82 Wichita State team started the season ranked sixth.
The Bluejays are the only Valley team ranked, though Northern Iowa did receive votes. Creighton's only opponent in the Top 25 is Wisconsin, which checks in at No. 23 and is one of five Big Ten teams in the preseason poll.
Three Big Ten teams were ranked in the top five — No. 1 Indiana, No. 4 Ohio State and No. 5 Michigan. Michigan State, at No. 14, was the other Big Ten team in the poll.
Creighton and Wisconsin will play Nov. 23 at the Las Vegas Invitational.
